The civil rights movement marks not only an important historic movement but also the foundation of a vital paradigm of equal opportunity, which extends into our lives today and for future generations. That is why we believe that this center must not only resonate with the feelings and memories generated by the civil rights movement, but also forward such a paradigm by proposing useful spaces for further discourse on an institutionally important site where civil rights activists also once gathered in hope for change. We propose a forum, a sunken courtyard space within the ground as an archeological "scar" that will foster dialogue and contemplation,
The center is connected to other public programs and exposed to the urban fabric. Extending from the forum below are sequential spaces, penetrating below and above ground in our intent to create a world displaced by injustice-an architecture which would resonate under the lens of those who underwent the tribulations of the movement as part of the narrative for visitors. Boundaries are created within to produce introspective domains, encapsulating spaces where people can be immersed in sequences of intense light and shadow, secluded from the surrounding urban chaos.
