This project calls for the implementation of an academic campus and convention center program on a rural site. The expansive views of the site and the verdant nature of the existing trail call for a sensitive building with a primary mass reminiscent of an untamed garden, and a disciplining element with characteristics similar to an existing landmark, complimenting it, rather than overpowering it. The project pays particular attention to the Albert Smiley Memorial Tower, unwrapping it for greater control of its scale within the landscape. This habitable wall frames the views of the landscape, and restrains the outpouring of the garden. This proposal for a satellite campus is intended as a seasonal home for groups of the Santa Fe Institute’s faculty, students, and guests, on a rotational basis. The campus is also meant to serve as a retreat for special events and conventions. The Wall is nothing more than a circulation device, framing the views, and ushering the user into the courtyard. The building mass is a garden, for enjoyment, discussion, retreat, and contemplation of place. The lower plinth is a place of seclusion that is completely oriented outward. It is where users have the view to themselves, and only to themselves. S K E T C H E S click to enlarge |
